College Football Wrap Up: Week 3 (2009)

 (Or how USC managed to lose again after beating Ohio State)

    Week 3 of the 2009 college football season had upsets, romps, amazing performances, and game winning drives. Another top-5 team fell to an unranked opponent, while one team that was unranked to begin the season skyrocketed into the top 10. Even though the majority of the season remains, week 3 separated some more pretenders from the contenders in the national championship race.

    #20 Miami beat #14 Georgia Tech instantly making Da U #9 in the polls, starting discussion that Miami is again a national power and Jacory Harris could win the Heisman as a Sophomore.Virginia Tech will end Miami's dream of a national championship this year.

    #10 Boise State held off a late rally from Fresno State and escaped with a win, propelling them to #8 in the polls. Bowling Green should present a challenge for the Broncos, but Kellen Moore and Co. are on track for another undefeated season.

    Jahvid Best's five TD performance in a win over Minny has many saying the future Heisman winner and the best team in the Pac 10 are in Berkley. They could be right. Cal will challenge USC for the right to be called the best of the Pac 10.

    Ohio State beats Toledo 38-0 and drops 2 spots in the AP poll. Go figure. No chance the Buckeyes make the national title this year.

    Michigan beat EMU to bring their record to 3-0. Don't look for a Big Ten championship this year, but Forcier and Michigan will be a power in a few years.

    Alabama killed North Texas and McElroy had a record day. That's about it. Florida-Alabama in Atlanta will be a great game come December.

    Florida won a closer-than-expected game with Lane Kiffin's squad from Knoxville. The sparring continues between Meyer and Kiffin, however. Florida still on track to win the SEC east and meet Alabama.

    Washington pulled a shocker by beating then-#3 USC. Washington, who was 0-12 last year, became the second team to beat USC the week after a big win against Ohio State (Oregon State being the first). Matt Barkley's injury didn't help USC any, having to start Aaron Corp (which didn't go as smoothly as planned). The winner of Cal-USC will go to the Rose Bowl and play Ohio State.

       #13 Virginia Tech beat #19 Nebraska on a late drive by T Mobile (Tyrod Taylor) setting up a big ACC clash between Miami and VT this Saturday. Winner of Miami-VT to the Orange Bowl.

    #18 Utah becomes one of the first mid major BCS hopefuls to fall (along with BYU). It's all up to you, Boise State, Houston, and TCU.

    TCU, Okie State, and LSU romped against bad/mediocre teams. What teams are for real?

    #2 Texas escaped with a 10-point win against Texas Tech. Almost felt like a repeat of the Florida-UT game. Florida-Texas in the national championship.

    Overrated Teams:

    Ole Miss: Scarlonia should pose a tough task for the Rebels, who DO NOT deserve #4

    Penn State: Somehow are #5 after crushing 3 bad teams.

    Cal: Should be around #12, not #6

    Miami: A loss to VT will dash Miami's hope for a dream season

Notes about the four QBs on the Ohio State football roster:

 Terrelle Pryor #2:

    Height: 6' 6"

    Weight: 235 lbs.

    Sophomore from Jeannette (PA)

    Had a 8-1 record as a freshman at OSU, ran a 4.33 forty (the fastest buckeye ever), threw for a career high 226 yards against PSU, scored the winning touchdown against Wisconsin, caught a TD pass against Texas in the Fiesta Bowl, two sport star in HS, majoring in Criminal Law.

 Joe Bauserman #14:

    Height: 6' 2"

    Weight: 220 lbs.

    Sophomore from Lincoln (Strasburg, VA)

    Joined the team as a walk-on, son of John and Joy Bauserman, has one brother, J.D., avid outdoors man, all-state in Virginia and Florida in football and baseball, threw for 3,000 yards and 28 TD as a junior and 2,000 yards at 27 TD as a senior, played 4 years in the Pittsburgh Pirate's minor league system. Played some in the season opener against Navy.

 Kenny Guiton #13:

    Height: 6' 2"

    Weight: 178 lbs.

    Freshman from Eisenhower (Aldine, TX)

    His Jr. season, Guiton threw for 2,592 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also added another 300 yards rushing with 12 touchdowns. This year he threw for 1,670 yards and 17 TD's against 9 INT's. Kansas, Northwestern, Houston, Iowa State, Rice, Baylor and Purdue expressed interest in Guiton. "Dual-threat quarterback with unlimited potential".

 Justin Siems #17:

    Height: 6' 3"

    Weight: 215 lbs.

    Freshman from Providence (Charlotte)

    Most Prolific passer at North Carolina Tech. Justins record was 14-2 as a starter at North Carolina Tech. His biggest game was for 302 yards passing. Coach Newmans said that Justin is one of the Top 6 Quarterbacks he has coached. Decided between Elon, Virginia, NC State, and Ohio State. Walk-on.

Ohio State Football 2009: Gaining Back National Respect

 The cool Autumn air blows through the orange and red leaves while the sun peeks out from behind a cloud. People wake up to relief that today is Saturday. Donning scarlet and gray, they head down to Columbus or any other party they can find with the game on. Ohio State football is Ohio, just as much as beautiful fall trees, apple orchards, and farmland. From Cincinnati to Cleveland, from Columbus to Toledo, the state is abuzz every Saturday morning about the Buckeyes. After five hard days of work, people love to sit down, relax, and cheer on their favorite team.

But there is a problem.

    Ohio State has lost their last four big games against OOC powerhouses (Florida, LSU, USC, Texas) and the nation has lost their respect for the Buckeyes. In 2009, the Buckeyes feature a younger and faster (and less experienced) squad then from the previous year.  They will be tested early with games against Navy (the nation's best rushing team from the past four years) and USC (who won 35-3 last year) and late games at Penn State and versus Michigan. The success of this Ohio State team will rely mainly on Terrelle Pryor and the OSU running game's three headed monster (Dan Herron, Brandon Saine, and Jaamal Berry).

QB: Terrelle Pryor - much depends on TP and Boom for OSU this year, 7-1 as a starter last year as a true freshman, dual threat

RB: Dan Herron - nicknamed "Boom" for his running style, replacing Beanie Wells

FB: Zach Boren - played LB in HS, should be a solid FB for years to come for OSU (he's a freshman this year)

C: Michael Brewster - returning starter, could turn into an amazing center

RT: Jim Cordle - senior, one of the top OL prospects coming out of HS

RG: Bryant Browning - powerful run blocker that should help Boom

LG: Justin Boren - transferred from Michigan, arguably OSU's most physical player on the OL

LT: Andrew Miller - beat out J.B. Shugarts for the starting spot

TE: Jake Ballard - big frame and has a lot of potential

WR: Dane Sazenbacher - veteran WR on the team this year, productive

Devier Posey - playmaking sophomore, also a lot of potential

Duron Carter - son of former OSU great Chris Carter (as if you haven't heard), highly recruited

DE: Thaddeus Gibson - destroys everything moving

DT: Doug Worthington - returning starter, versatile

DT: Dexter Larimore -veteran, tough

DE: Cameron Heyward - junior, great player

WLB: Ross Homan - returning starter, physical

MLB: Brian Rolle - junior, greatly improved from last year

SLB: Austin Spitler - tough, physical player, dynamic

CB: Andres Amos - veteran, hampered by an injury last year

FS: Anderson Russell - experienced, three year starter

SS: Kurt Coleman - the anchor of the OSU secondary, highly regarded recruit

CB: Chimdi Checkwa - very athletic, one of the better players in the OSU backfield

PK: Aaron Pettrey - senior, longest FG - 54 yards, accurate

P: Jon Thoma - senior, walk on

KR: Brandon Saine - HS sprinter, but does can he return kicks effectively?

PR: Ray Small - looks to improve on his performance last year and establish himself  as a threat to return a punt for a touchdown. Hopefully can avoid suspensions as well.

Steps To Regaining National Respect:

1. Beat (or lose a close game) USC

2. Win the Big Ten

3. Win a BCS bowl game

A lot depends this year on the OL and RBs. Terrelle Pryor needs to step up if the Buckeyes want to return to a BCS bowl.
